  3.     On Friday, Oct. 20, I arrived home after a twelve-hour day
  4. at the Charles F. Richter Seismological Laboratory at the
  5. University of California at Santa Cruz. I had spent the previous
  6. days at home waiting for phone, electricity and gas service. I
  7. was happy to walk through my door with my first piece of mail
  8. since the Oct. 17 earthquake: TIME. Imagine my surprise at
  9. seeing your article on hidden faults in the earth, "Shaking Down
  10. Deep" (SCIENCE, Oct. 23). Thanks for the information; your
  11. timing was impeccable.
